I am attracted towards clean straight lines of mid century modern furniture. I came across this piece (for free on Kijiji), when I was looking for a MCM dresser for my younger daughter’s room. The owner gave me a confused look, when I told her that my daughter wanted a dresser like that for her room, and I don’t blame her given the condition and look of the dresser at that time. Take a look for yourself.
My younger daughter wanted the dresser to be two toned with stained wood and coral paint. While sanding the drawer fronts for staining, I just sanded through the too thin veneer to MDF base. Not a pretty sight. To achieve the vision of my daughter, I just refaced the drawer fronts with 1/4 inch oak plywood with contact cement. It looks like it was part of the dresser for always.
Then I stained the drawers with Minwax special walnut stain.
I painted the legs and the dresser body with coral paint (a mix of 2-3 mistint paints, I had on hand). I painted the handles with dusty gold paint. I taped and painted a small border on dresser top and legs with the same dusty gold paint and the drawer fronts and handles got some coral paint touch ups.
Drawer sides got some painted and stenciled treatment. I simply lined the drawers with adhesive liners.
Here is the final reveal.
