Makeover of a Kitchen Table and Chairs

Two tone dining table and chairs - a makeoverI painted this kitchen table and matching chairs about five years ago and still love them just as much as I did then. This was a basic pine set, we had purchased from Walmart, when we moved to Canada in 2005. I could find just this one old picture of it.Two tone dining table and chairs - a makeoverI painted this set to go with the newly made over kitchen in our previous house. You can read more about the kitchen makeover here. Here is this just one picture I have of the makeover process:Two tone dining table and chairs - a makeoverI don’t have any more of the process pictures, but I will try explaining the steps taken in achieving the final results.

  • I first stripped the table top and chair seats and backs, because these were the parts which I planned to stain.
  • I then sanded everything from top to bottom and cleaned thoroughly.
  • I then taped and stenciled the design on table top, chair seats, and chair backs on both sides (front and back) with white acrylic paint. Taping for the design and stenciling was the most time consuming part of the whole process.
  • Then I stained the same parts with a mixture of black walnut and ebony stain. I had to apply 3 coats to achieve the color I was looking for, letting each coat dry before applying the next coat.
  • I then mixed my own chalk paint in two colors (leafy green and white) with the calcium carbonate recipe. You can get tons of information about DIY chalk paint on the internet. I had read a lot of good things about the chalk paint and was very excited to try some. To be honest, I was somewhat disappointed. I’d rather go the long route and use primer and then paint. I will add my 2 cents on this topic in some other blog post.
  • I then lightly stained the painted parts with dark walnut stain.
  • After letting the stain and paint cure for 3 days, I waxed everything with 3 coats of paste wax.
  • That’s it. I re-wax the table top and chair seats every 1-2 years, because these are the parts which get the most usage.
